Clear blue water, atmospheric old buildings, sending princess Myrcella to Dorne. These can all be found in Dubrovnik, the idyllic Croatian town by the Adriatic Sea. Working as the backdrop the world famous HBO show Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik offers beautiful sights unparalleled by few. Whether you find yourself in Dubrovnik due to the GOT series or because you want to relax in a beautiful environment, Dubrovnik has something to offer you. Here are my top 5 things to do in Dubrovnik in no specific order.
1. THE WALLS OF DUBROVNIK WALKING TOUR
The Old Town of Dubrovnik is known for its picturesque houses and cobblestone streets, which are all worth seeing, but the real treat is the walking tour on the city walls. The tour is not guided so you can take your time to stroll and look at the sights in peace. Just remember to bring a water bottle with you as the walls can get hot on a sunny summer day.
2. BEACH BONINOVO
A little rocky beach hidden away from the tourists. Sounds like an adventure, doesn't it? You can find Beach Boninovo on your left when walking from the Old Town to the Lapad area. A set of stairs in the side of the cliffs leads on a beach where the views are breathtakingly beautiful. During summer you might find some locals throwing a barbecue in there but you might also be in luck and find it completely deserted. Having your swimsuit with you is essential but if you're not shy a dip in the sea in your underwear is refreshing as long as you're prepared to walk in wet clothes afterwards.
3. A KAYAK TOUR
Paddling along the coastline to a natural cave and swimming in the sea. If that sounds like your cup of tea then I suggest you sign up for one of the many kayak tours hosted in Dubrovnik. You get to enjoy the fresh air and the view of the old town from the sea, what a perfect contrast to walking around in the city. If you're new to kayaking, don't worry as the guide will teach you before the tour leaves the beach. This is definitely one of the most memorable things you can do during your trip.
4. TAKE STROLL AROUND THE TOWN WITH SOME ICE CREAM
Ice cream on a hot summer day? I dare to say not many things are better than that. If you can find yourself some Italian gelato you're up for the perfect day. That is my motto anyway. The serpentine streets of the Old Town offer a look of the city itself and are full of interesting shops. You can find tiny art exhibits, jewelry made by the locals but also run-of-the-mill souvenir shops and sham boutiques so stay sharp if you're wanting to purchase something original to bring home. Otherwise, just walking and enjoying the atmosphere is a treat in itself.
