London, Oxford & Lewes

Kello on 22.30 ja ulkona jyrisee ukkonen. Mulla on ollut melko syksyinen olo koko päivän ja vähän ristiriitaiset fiilikset siitä, haluunko kesän oikeasti jo loppuvan vai en. Toisaalta pidän vielä yllä sitä pientä toivon kipinää, että Suomen kesä näyttäytyis vielä, mutta tunnun pettyvän joka päivä. Tänään oli ihan mukavan lämmintä ja aurinkoista, mutta koko ajan sitä olettaa auringon vaan huijaavan ja kohta jo puikahtavan piiloon pilven taakse.

Se small talkista säähän liittyen. Mä lupasin kertoilla omassa postauksessaan Brightonin matkan aikana tehdyistä pienemmistä kaupunkivierailuista, joten käydään asiaan. Sen kolmen viikon aikana mä ehdin käydä Brightonin lisäksi 2 kertaa Lontoossa, vierailla Oxfordissa, Portsmouthissa, Lewesissä ja Eastbournessa. Osa vierailuista kesti koko päivän, osa vain muutaman tunnin. Kuvia mulla on lähinnä otsikon mainitsemista kaupungeista, sillä niistä nautin itse kaikista eniten. Kolmen viikon UK kielikurssiin siis sisältyy muutamia kaupunkivierailuja ja niistä itse olin etukäteen saanut tietoa lähinnä noista Lontoo-vierailuista. Ensimmäinen reissu oli puhtaasti shoppailua varten ja toisella kerralla käveltiin ympäri kaupunkia ja katseltiin nähtävyyksiä. Ja vaikka Lontoo onkin tosi hieno kaupunki ja monipuolinen kulttuuriltaan, pidin henkilökohtaisesti enemmän Brightonista. Lontoo on se ensimmäinen kaupunki, joka yleisesti tulee mieleen, kun mainitaan Iso-Britannia, mutta se on silti vain yksi kaupunki. Pääkaupunkina ja ikonisena symbolina jopa, Lontoo on saanut mielestäni hieman yliarvostetun maineen, joka ei silti sulje pois sen monia mahdollisuuksia. On vain mukava nähdä muitakin kaupunkeja. 

It's half ten pm and I can hear the thunderstorm coming. I've been feeling a bit autumn-y the whole day and I have kinda incoherent thoughts about whether I really do want the summer to end or not. On the other hand I like to keep up that spark of hope for the summer to really arrive here in Finland, but then again I feel like I'm just going to get disappointed if I let myself hope that much. Even though today was all nice and sunny I have a feeling like the sun could just go into hiding at any minute.

Anyway, that's that about weather. I promised you a post telling about the little trips to different towns while I was in Brighton, so here we go. In that three weeks time we visited London twice, Oxford, Portsmouth, Lewes and Eastbourne. Some of the trips took the whole day, others just a few hours. The pictures I have are mostly from the three towns mentioned in the title of this post, because those were the towns in which I enjoyed spending time the most. The three weeks language course includes a few trips to towns near the course location as I told. I had been informed about the two trips to London forehand. The first one was mostly for shopping and the second one for sightseeing. Even though London is a great city and has a versatile culture, I preferred Brighton better. I mean, London is the first city that pops in to your mind when talking about England or even UK, but it's still just a city. As a capital of England, London has a reputation of an iconic landmark and is, in my opinion, a little bit overrated. That doesn't mean it wasn't an interesting place to visit, it is, believe me, but it's good to see other places too.

Oxfordiin päätin itse lähteä vasta muutamaa päivää ennen kuin matka piti maksaa, mutta en ole katunut päätöstäni. Itse kielimatkaa varatessani en ollut edes ajatellut lähteväni ylimääräistä maksavalle kaupunkivierailulle, mutta paikan päällä hinta olikin yllättäen halvempi kuin Suomessa ja totta kai minunkin oli sitten pakko päästä katsomaan paikkoja, joissa Harry Potter -elokuvia on kuvattu. Tämä on se kohta, jossa tunnustan olevani potterhead ja ylpeä siitä. Tosi moni matkalla saamistani ystävistä jakoi kanssani nämä mielenkiinnon kohteet, mikä oli hienoa, sillä siitä riitti jutun aihetta. Oxfordissa meillä oli pieni Harry Potter -faniporukka, jonka kanssa ihmettelimme elämää ja ihastelimme mm. Oxford Christ Churchia sekä paikallista Waterstones-kirjakauppaa.

I decided to go to Oxford only a few days before I was supposed to pay for the trip, but it's a decision I did not regret. While booking the language course I hadn't even thought about paying extra for some activities or trips, but in location the prizes were surprisingly cheaper compared to the ones in Finland so I took the change. Of course I just had to see the filming locations of the Harry Potter -movies myself. Yes, this is the part where I admit I'm a potterhead and proud of it. In fact, many of the people in the same course were too and we shared other interests too which made it easy for us to talk about for ages. And it was nice to have a group of other Harry Potter fans to admire the place with.

Viimeisenä, mutta kaukana vähäisimmästä haluan kertoa teille päivästä, jonka muistan yhtenä elämäni onnellisimmista. Viimeisen viikon perjantaina vietimme lähes koko päivän aamun oppituntien jälkeen Lewesissä, läheisessä pikkukaupungissa. Tarkoituksena oli järjestää jonkinlainen aktiviteetti, mutta auringon porottaessa täydellä teholla ja kaikkien ollessa melko väsyneitä ja kuumissaan, päätimme vain katsella ympärillemme ja seikkailla ympäri kaupunkia. Pikkukaupunkin ilmapiiri, ystävälliset ihmiset, hyvä ruoka yhdessä parhaiden ystävien kanssa ja illemmalla EF:n järjestämät allasjuhlat sekä väsynyt, mutta hyväntuulinen matka kotiin. Näistä asioista koostui päivä Lewesissä, enkä mä tuu varmaan koskaan unohtamaan, kuinka iloinen ja onnellinen olin silloin.

Finally last, but definitely not the least I want to share with you a day which I remember as one the happiest days of my life. On the last Friday we spent almost the entire day in Lewes, a little town near Brighton. We were meant to have a passport point activity, but while the sun was shining and everyone felt kinda tired, we ended up just hanging around and exploring the town. The atmosphere of a little town, people so friendly I was overwhelmed by it, good food with the best people I could have hoped for and later on in the evening the Pool Party EF held for us and the tired but happy journey back to Brighton. Those things made my day in that one Friday in Lewes and I won't ever forget how happy and light I felt back then.
